In life, I have seen this verse played out. It actually hits too close to home. It reminds me of my fickleness, of my sinfulness and of my need for a great and mighty Savior.
There have been those times when I have abided in Jesus and He supernaturally imparted wisdom, calmness, patience, even graciousness in the midst of the challenges of everyday life. …and then their are those seasons where I have stopped abiding, where I have listened to my fleshly desires and walked the way of the fool, consumed with worries and irritations rather than coming back to Your presence.
O Lord, like Israel I say I will obey but don’t. Like Paul, I cry WOE IS ME – I do that sin which I don’t want to do (Romans 7)! … and yet You are patient, merciful, slow to wrath and kind. Thank You, Jesus, for saving the wretched – and I’m the worst. But the victory rests in Christ’s work on our behalf alone.
